Are You Carrying Other People’s Emotions?

Exam results arrive bringing celebration, relief, disappointment and sometimes heartbreak.

Even if no one in your home is waiting for results, you might still feel an unexpected flutter in your chest or a heaviness in your stomach. You might notice your thoughts becoming unsettled or your sleep shifting.

Sometimes, these sensations don’t come from your own experiences at all. They can be part of the “emotional weather” around you, feelings drifting into your own energy field without your conscious permission.

Beyond Exam Season

Exams are just one example. Emotional waves can also rise around:

  • Grief – after a loss in the family, a neighbour’s bereavement, or even hearing sad news on the radio.
  • Shock or horror – after witnessing something disturbing or hearing a traumatic story.
  • Shame – your own or someone else’s, often unspoken but still deeply felt.
  • Heartache – from relationship changes, endings, or even the vulnerability of someone you care about.

You might leave a conversation or a crowded space carrying emotions that aren’t yours, yet they feel as heavy and real as if they were.

The Empath’s Question

If you recognise this in yourself, you might be highly empathic, someone whose energetic boundaries are naturally porous.

Here’s a simple way to check:

Pause and ask: “Is this mine?” If the answer is no, acknowledge the feeling, thank it for showing up and let it go.

Protecting Your Space

Visualise your energy field drawing in close around you, like a soft cocoon. You can still care, but you don’t have to carry.

Ground yourself by:

  • Stepping into nature, especially woodland, where your nervous system can reset.
  • Placing your feet firmly on the ground and imagining roots growing down into the earth.
  • Taking slow, steady breaths to bring your awareness back into your own body.

During results week, as emotions ripple through the air, whether from personal milestones, or life’s deeper challenges, notice what you’re holding.

Ask yourself if it’s really yours and remember: awareness is often the first step in feeling lighter. Our Root and Reconnect 3 week course is designed to help you connect to yourself, the understand your energy and the ground cleanse and protect it so that it becomes second nature. Then you can help others to do the same. Click here to find out more.
